ORC Week 7: Design Details
Next Wednesday is reveal day! It’s that time of year when Instagram timelines will be flooded with all the hard work from both Featured Designers and Guest Participants. It’s like Christmas as a follower, but it’s chaos on the other side of screen trying to get everything ready to be photographed. Saying the details make a room isn’t just a saying - it’s true. Function, flow and form are essential but the lack of styling can make a room fall flat. If you’ve ever seen any design show competition you know what I mean. Cue up the scene where the designer runs out of time because they were working to finish the larger elements and ran out of time for styling. Said designer is typically the one that is sent home - end scene. Well that’s how the One Room Challenge feels, especially when things are delayed, arrive broken or in the wrong color. So many things are out of our control yet the deadline looms near. Luckily there are no losers in this scenario - we are winners.
Week 7
This week I will be focusing on all the details using things I have on hand, and as a shop owner I have plenty. I’ve been studying kitchen styling for a few weeks now trying to determine the “style” I like best. I’ve seen everything from modern and minimal to layered European. I came across my favorite movie kitchens and learned they all come from Nancy Meyers. If you’ve ever seen Something’s Got to Give, The Holiday or It’s Complicated - Nancy Meyers had her hands on those kitchens (SN: I also love all these movies and can recite them word by word). I love to cook (time permitting) and I want that to show in the kitchen. I also love layers and flowers and fresh herbs so I plan to play with mixing in all these elements. For me styling is a feeling, so I add - step back - take away or add some more. I haven’t use many vintage pieces in the room, so this is my opportunity to layers those into the design.

I’ve kept most of the design under wrap since the kitchen cabinets were painted. That’s because I like good surprises and hope you do too! Let me share with you the art I selected from One Room Challenge sponsor Minted.
Originally I was going to hang these on a small wall between my kitchen and dining area, but when they arrived I instantly they were a better fit for my living room. I changed out a painting in the family room and used it in the kitchen instead, further proving my point that when you buy things you love you can always find a place for them. These limited edition canvases will compliment the 1960’s oil painting over the fireplace perfectly.
